AI Proctoring for K-12: Ethics, Accuracy, and What to Use Instead

AI proctoring is sold as the cheapest way to keep an exam honest. In K-12, the math rarely works once bias, false positives, and parent complaints enter the picture.

A vendor demo showing a webcam flagging "suspicious eye movement" looks impressive. A twelve-year-old with a tic, an ADHD diagnosis, or a sibling walking through the kitchen turns the same feature into a parent meeting. Before adopting AI proctoring for K-12, school leaders should look hard at where the model fails, who absorbs the cost of those failures, and whether a more boring approach delivers the same integrity at a lower ethical price.

Where AI proctoring goes wrong in K-12

Three failure modes show up consistently in deployments. The first is bias: published audits keep finding higher false-positive rates for students with darker skin, glasses, head coverings, or assistive technology. The second is the home environment: K-12 students do not have private offices, and flagging "another person in frame" punishes the kid sharing a room with a toddler. The third is privacy: pointing a webcam and microphone at a minor's bedroom is a category of data collection most districts would not approve if they read the contract carefully. Accuracy in plain numbers

Even a 5% false-positive rate sounds small until you do the multiplication. A school giving four exams a year to 600 students generates roughly 120 wrongful flags. Each one needs a human review, a family conversation, and sometimes a retake. The "automation savings" disappear into administrative work — and that is before the trust damage. Privacy and consent for minors

If your district is being pitched an AI proctoring tool for K-12, ask the vendor for three documents: the published false-positive rate by demographic group, the data-retention and deletion policy for video and audio, and the appeals process for a flagged minor. Designing an honest exam day

An exam day that does not need surveillance still needs design.
